چکیده

In this paper we propose and develop an iterative method to calculate a limiting probability distribution vector of a transition probability tensor P arising from a higher-order Markov chain. In the model, the computation of such limiting probability distribution vector x can be formulated as a Z-eigenvalue problem Pxm−1 = x associated with the eigenvalue 1 of P where all the entries of x are required to be non-negative and its summation must be equal to one. This is an analog of the matrix case for a limiting probability vector of a transition probability matrix arising from the first order Markov chain. We show that if P is a transition probability tensor, then solutions of this Z-eigenvalue problem exist. When P is irreducible, all the entries of solutions are positive. With some suitable conditions of P, the limiting probability distribution vector is even unique. Under the same uniqueness assumption, the linear convergence of the iterative method can be established. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the theoretical results of the proposed model and the iterative method.

On the Second Dominant Eigenvalue Affecting the Power Method for Transition Probability Tensors

It is known that the second dominant eigenvalue of a matrix determines the convergence rate of the power method. Though ineffective for general eigenvalue computation, the power method has been of practical usage for computing the stationary distribution of a stochastic matrix. For a Markov chain with memory m, the transition “matrix" becomes an order-m tensor. Under suitable assumptions, the s...

The Effects of Oil Price Shocks on Transitional Dynamics of Business Cycles in Iran: Markov Switching Model with Time Varying Transition Probabilities (MS-TVTP)

The business cycles are one of the most important economic indicators that they show the changes in economic activities during time. The study of business cycles is important because the understanding fluctuations in GDP and effective factors on these fluctuations help policy makers to plan better and more efficient. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of oil price shoc...

Unscented Auxiliary Particle Filter Implementation of the Cardinalized Probability Hypothesis Density Filters

The probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter suffers from lack of precise estimation of the expected number of targets. The Cardinalized PHD (CPHD) recursion, as a generalization of the PHD recursion, remedies this flaw and simultaneously propagates the intensity function and the posterior cardinality distribution. While there are a few new approaches to enhance the Sequential Monte Carlo (S...

Assessment of Goodness of Fit Methods in Determining the Best Regional Probability Distribution of Rainfall Data

One of the most important problems in time series analysis of stream flow and rainfall data in an area is selecting the best probability distribution. Since the rainfall stations are associated and correlated with each other, so statistical analysis of the station data seamlessly are very important. Therefore, the first step in data analysis, is selecting the prevailing probability distribution...
